Egg, by Andy Weir

You were on your way home when you died.

It was a car accident. Nothing particularly remarkable, but fatal nonetheless. You left behind a wife and two children. It was a painless death. The EMTs tried their best to save you, but to no avail. Your body was so utterly shattered you were better off, trust me.

And that’s when you met me.

“What… what happened?” You asked. “Where am I?”

“You died,” I said, matter-of-factly. No point in mincing words.

“There was a… a truck and it was skidding…”

“Yup,” I said.

“I… I died?”

“Yup. But don’t feel bad about it. Everyone dies,” I said.

You looked around. There was nothingness. Just you and me. “What is this place?” You asked. “Is this the afterlife?”

“More or less,” I said.

“Are you god?” You asked.

“Yup,” I replied. “I’m God.”

“My kids… my wife,” you said.

“What about them?”

“Will they be all right?”

“That’s what I like to see,” I said. “You just died and your main concern is for your family. That’s good stuff right there.”

You looked at me with fascination. To you, I didn’t look like God. I just looked like some man. Or possibly a woman. Some vague authority figure, maybe. More of a grammar school teacher than the almighty.

“Don’t worry,” I said. “They’ll be fine. Your kids will remember you as perfect in every way. They didn’t have time to grow contempt for you. Your wife will cry on the outside, but will be secretly relieved. To be fair, your marriage was falling apart. If it’s any consolation, she’ll feel very guilty for feeling relieved.”

“Oh,” you said. “So what happens now? Do I go to heaven or hell or something?”

“Neither,” I said. “You’ll be reincarnated.”

“Ah,” you said. “So the Hindus were right,”

“All religions are right in their own way,” I said. “Walk with me.”

You followed along as we strode through the void. “Where are we going?”

“Nowhere in particular,” I said. “It’s just nice to walk while we talk.”

“So what’s the point, then?” You asked. “When I get reborn, I’ll just be a blank slate, right? A baby. So all my experiences and everything I did in this life won’t matter.”

“Not so!” I said. “You have within you all the knowledge and experiences of all your past lives. You just don’t remember them right now.”

I stopped walking and took you by the shoulders. “Your soul is more magnificent, beautiful, and gigantic than you can possibly imagine. A human mind can only contain a tiny fraction of what you are. It’s like sticking your finger in a glass of water to see if it’s hot or cold. You put a tiny part of yourself into the vessel, and when you bring it back out, you’ve gained all the experiences it had.

“You’ve been in a human for the last 48 years, so you haven’t stretched out yet and felt the rest of your immense consciousness. If we hung out here for long enough, you’d start remembering everything. But there’s no point to doing that between each life.”

“How many times have I been reincarnated, then?”

“Oh lots. Lots and lots. An in to lots of different lives.” I said. “This time around, you’ll be a Chinese peasant girl in 540 AD.”

“Wait, what?” You stammered. “You’re sending me back in time?”

“Well, I guess technically. Time, as you know it, only exists in your universe. Things are different where I come from.”

“Where you come from?” You said.

“Oh sure,” I explained “I come from somewhere. Somewhere else. And there are others like me. I know you’ll want to know what it’s like there, but honestly you wouldn’t understand.”

“Oh,” you said, a little let down. “But wait. If I get reincarnated to other places in time, I could have interacted with myself at some point.”

“Sure. Happens all the time. And with both lives only aware of their own lifespan you don’t even know it’s happening.”

“So what’s the point of it all?”

“Seriously?” I asked. “Seriously? You’re asking me for the meaning of life? Isn’t that a little stereotypical?”

“Well it’s a reasonable question,” you persisted.

I looked you in the eye. “The meaning of life, the reason I made this whole universe, is for you to mature.”

“You mean mankind? You want us to mature?”

“No, just you. I made this whole universe for you. With each new life you grow and mature and become a larger and greater intellect.”

“Just me? What about everyone else?”

“There is no one else,” I said. “In this universe, there’s just you and me.”

You stared blankly at me. “But all the people on earth…”

“All you. Different incarnations of you.”

“Wait. I’m everyone!?”

“Now you’re getting it,” I said, with a congratulatory slap on the back.

“I’m every human being who ever lived?”

“Or who will ever live, yes.”

“I’m Abraham Lincoln?”

“And you’re John Wilkes Booth, too,” I added.

“I’m Hitler?” You said, appalled.

“And you’re the millions he killed.”

“I’m Jesus?”

“And you’re everyone who followed him.”

You fell silent.

“Every time you victimized someone,” I said, “you were victimizing yourself. Every act of kindness you’ve done, you’ve done to yourself. Every happy and sad moment ever experienced by any human was, or will be, experienced by you.”

You thought for a long time.

“Why?” You asked me. “Why do all this?”

“Because someday, you will become like me. Because that’s what you are. You’re one of my kind. You’re my child.”

“Whoa,” you said, incredulous. “You mean I’m a god?”

“No. Not yet. You’re a fetus. You’re still growing. Once you’ve lived every human life throughout all time, you will have grown enough to be born.”

“So the whole universe,” you said, “it’s just…”

“An egg.” I answered. “Now it’s time for you to move on to your next life.”

And I sent you on your way.

I caught a clip of “Journey to the edge of the Universe” on MORE4 this morning and thought that it acts as a great metaphor for the work we do at Star Performance.

Behind the main three stars of Orions Belt (the three stars on the Star Performance logo) there is a ‘dark cloud’ with a massive gravitational pull. This ‘dark cloud’ sucks in all the light, dust and matter and a massive amount of pressure is created. This pressure develops a nuclear reaction developing as much energy as our sun!!!!!

This ‘dark cloud’ is actually a ‘star factory’…..

This is where stars are born……

Out of the darkness, literally hundreds of stars are born out of this nebulla, and once they reach a critical mass they generate their own momentum to escape this gravitional pull.

I also learnt that stars never actually ‘die’ or’burn-out’, they just change form. They develop into ‘white dwarfs’ and evolve……

I have just watched the movie Green Lantern and it suddently dawned on me how many movies there have been over the past few years where they have talked about that ‘inner power’ we all have, and the battles we have to access it.

For instance, first up theres the Matrix series, when Neo is battling to believe in himself and when he does he has the ability to change the ‘reality’ around him; A reality which the Matrix/Architects design. Also they talk about ‘instant downloads’ from ‘The Operator’. We learn information instantiously and simulataniously at an unconscious level, and its all about how easily we access that information which reflects our results.

In Spiderman when Peter Parker is learning about his new-found skills. There are a few bumps and bruises along the way, but the transformation is immense. With great power comes great responsibility!

In Inception the concept of embedded metaphors is played with, a dream within a dream, to access the unconscious mind. How people shut off bad memories and experiences, which can eat away at them, while also affecting his performance to do a job. Leonardo Di Caprio kept on getting distracted from his work, because of an unresolved issue with his wife. Also how we can dig deep enough in to our unconscious to access real resolution to any problem we are having.

And now, in Green Lantern, how fear can spread and infect our will and self-belief. When the scientist transformed and mutated, making him physically ugly. How even the most confident people still feel fear, its how we react to it that makes a difference. And that difference is courage!

What other films can you think of which tell the story of an amazing transformation?

The underlying theme in all of these is the learning and development of an individual. By surrounding themselves with the right team they essentially get coached in to accessing this new behaviour and actualising the ‘real’ person hidden inside. Does this sound like someone you know?

I have seen some great transformations with my clients at Star Performance, even on a one-off session, never mind the guys and girls who are achieving their goals on the One Programme.

OK so lets talk about what is happening inside your body. I was reading some very specialist information the other day written by Dax Moy (UK’s highest paid personal trainer), and he is a Specialist in Physiological Kinetic Chain work. This is basically how the body moves and responds to stimuli.

This work is based on “The law of facilitation” which states:
When an impulse has passed once through a certain set of neurons (known as the “facilitated section”) to the exclusion of others, it will tend to take the same course on a future occasions. And, each time that impulse traverses this path, on all future occasions, the resistance will be less.

Which sounds very impressive but what does that actually mean?
Well, it’s simply a fancy way of saying that the more times you do something the easier it becomes from a neurological standpoint. Facilitation simply means ‘to make easier’.

Why is this useful to you?

Well, to understand that you’d need to know just a little about myelin.
If you’re not familiar with myelin, it’s the outer coating that covers the neurons that make up each of our nerves. It may be useful to think of it as the rubber outer around the electrical cables that run through your home, keeping you safe from the electricity and keeping the electricity channelled to where it needs to go.

Similarly, with the nervous system, myelin is a (mostly) lipid (fat) membrane that covers the sheath and speeds up the flow of the chemical-electric signals travelling the length of the nervous system so that they can innervate the tissues they’re targeting and (in the case of skeletal muscle) cause a contraction of a motor unit to occur.

Now, when we’re born we aren’t particularly well ‘myelinated’ so our neural conductivity is poor and our movements erratic but, and here’s where the law of facilitation comes in, the more we challenge ourselves with a movement (the same movement), the more we stimulate oligodendrocytes to produce the myelin sheath which in turn, speeds up and improves neural conductivity to the motor units we’re trying to target.

So movements get easier.

(Side Note: Horses are born with a much greater amount of myelin and so can stand and move freely shortly after birth… now you know why)

That’s the good news.

The bad news is that facilitation isn’t a law that discriminates. You can facilitate bad movements just as easily as you facilitate good ones; by repeating them over and over and over again the myelin sheath wraps around and around and around until the movement can be created automatically and without thought.

This is why it’s often quoted that it takes around 300-500 repetitions to CREATE a good level of mastery in a new movement yet 3-5 THOUSAND to correct a faulty pattern. That’s because the whole time you’re ‘writing’ the new pattern and laying down myelin you’re competing against the super-myelinated patterns who’re trying to take over their usual role.

So….now you know why some people are more co-ordinated than others, and how you can improve your co-ordination.
ENJOY YOUR NEXT WORK OUT

Have you ever noticed that some people seem to be more co-ordinated than others?

What is it that they are doing differently?

First of all I think its important to know what a thought process ‘IS‘ AND some fundamentals about how the body works. Now, everybody thinks that thinking goes on in the brain…. STOP THE PRESS….No it doesn’t.
We have neuro-receptors throughout every single cell in the human body, so in essence we are thinking machines.

Now, if you think of a normal home computer, the hard-drive sitting under the desk is doing all the work, while you tap away on your keyboard and things are just coming up on the screen. In metaphorical terms, the key-board and screen are your body and limbs, and your brain is the hard-drive doing the work under the desk. No one would be as naive to think words just magic themselves from the keyboard on to the screen….there is an impulse going from the key-board, down to the hard-drive, then from the hard drive up to the screen. The impluse is carried by wires (in your body, these are the nerves) and the words that appear on screen would be your behaviour.

Now that you have that image in your head. Your body holistically learns the timing of these electrical impulses and so picks up on the timing in relation to everything else where it is NOT getting an impulse from.

When people are unco-ordinated, they are getting in to a mental state where they are picking up interference from the wrong nerves and therefore means they are firing the wrong muscles at the wrong time.

I didnt realise that there are links between specific emotions and actual diseases until I went through my training back in 2007. I really found it fascinating…..but when you think about it, it makes sooooo much sense.
Negative emotion brings about disease. So just think about that word for a minute….disease, disease, dis-ease. The clue is in the word. Its dis-ease between mind and body. In Timeline Therapy, we look at the 5 main negative emotions, but others can be added in. These 5-main negative emotions (and their relative diseases) are:
- Anger is linked to heart attacks and heightened cholesterol
- Sadness is linked to weakened immune system and depression
- Fear is linked to excessive stress, PTSD and phobia’s
- Guilt is linked to lowered healing energy
- Conflict is linked to cancer

The beauty of Timeline therapy is that you can access the limiting decisions around the first event of this happening, WITHOUT experiencing the trauma of actually reliving the experience.

So, if you could look after your health and well-being by booking a session, just imagine how much piece of mind that would bring.
My mother-in-law is a Renal Nurse, looking after people with kidney problems and putting them on dialysis, and she was telling me that you can definitely see a correlation between people with a positive attitude and drastically reduced recovery times; And this is how I am currently helping people at York District Hospital.
I have use this process myself and I have also helped out several cancer patients. Now, I am not saying that this is a ‘healing’ process, but there is a definite link between the mind and body and if you can bring that closer in to alignment with true health, happiness and congruency, then that can only be a good thing, cant it.
